Tonight, you will learn about how to use native plants to attract the pollinators and wildlife that can help our forest gardens grow.
We will continue to explore harvesting and preserving our bounty to sustain us throughout the year. Freezing is another way of preserving your harvest and you will learn how to make and take home an easy freezer jam in order to be able to savor your summer harvests all year long, or share with friends.
Permaculture edible forest gardens typically consist of at least seven layers – fungi, groundcovers, vines, herbaceous, shrubs, sub-canopy trees, canopy trees. Over the course of four months, learn about the plants commonly used within each layer including varieties, care and maintenance, ecology, best application, harvesting, and uses. For each layer we’ll discuss 15-40 plants empowering you with the knowledge and confidence to effectively incorporate a full range of tasty, functional species into your permaculture garden!
This series of three classes on the forest garden shrub layer will give you everything you need to know to create an abundant, well-integrated shrub support system. Take one or take them all!
- 9/17: Fertilizers, Friends and Fedges + Propagation 101: You will learn which plants provide nutrient cycling and how to plant them with others for maximum benefit. Also, learning how to propagate plants is a critical forest garden skill to grow abundance and save costs. You will learn basic techniques to easily propagate shrubs to plant in your garden, share with friends, or pot up and sell, and you will bring home some starters for your own garden!
- 9/24: Nuts and Berries + Drying & Storing: We have an abundance of shrubs to choose from when it comes to food producing varieties, and this class will highlight some of our favorites and easiest to grow. It will be a year before you’re able to harvest each crop again, so you will also learn some basic food preservation techniques for enjoying your forest garden bounty throughout the year.
- 10/1: Berries, Birds and Butterflies + Food Preservation: During this class you will learn how to attract our beneficial garden friends with plant selection. Freezing is another way of preserving your harvest and you will learn how to make and take home an easy freezer jam in order to be able to savor your summer harvests all year long, or share with friends.
