If you’re dreaming of harvesting mouth watering small fruits in your own backyard then come to this class!
If you are already trying to grow small fruits and you’re harvesting a bushel of problems then come to this class!
This class will teach you how to maintain productive strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, currants, kiwi, elderberry, gooseberry and the four varieties of seedless grapes best for the Chicago area. We will demystify primocanes and floricanes, mother/daughter plants, pruning, pest and disease management, and learn how to grow great tasting fruit. It’s not hard once you know a few secrets to growing healthy plants. We will discuss:
- How to prepare the soil
- How to feed the plants
- How to control insects and diseases without poisons
- How to harvest the fruit before the birds do!
There are several books that will be recommended and a handout that will provide an outline to guide your efforts. Growing fruits is actually easy once you know what to look for and how to fix problems when they show up. We will also recommend specific varieties and where to buy them. Some suppliers are better than others and we will name names! There is a lot of information that is written about soil preparation for growing fruits but it is actually much easier and simpler than they say it is and we will learn why pH is NOT as important as all the books say.
