What is health and where does it come from? Mainstream media makes you believe health comes from a pill, miracle food, or the latest exercise fad. But can those things really bring you health? According to the Constitution of the World Health Organization, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
I think we need to read that again, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The medical industry (note the word industry) would have you believe that health is the absence of disease or infirmity, and all you need is a drug, surgery or therapy to be healthy. I've met many people who have bought into this definition and haven't found them to be healthy, or any state of health I would aspire to.
Have you met some people whom you would describe as healthy? What makes them healthy? Is it their positive mindset, happy disposition, physical capability, calmness, centeredness, compassion, attentiveness? To me it's someone who is really ALIVE, glowing with their vibrant energy, transmitting positive connections with everyone they meet. They are someone you want to share time with because they make you feel good and happy and healthy.
You may say, "Oh some people are just born that way," but I challenge that thinking. Healthy people persevere because they cultivate health every day with specific practices that strengthen their physical, mental and social well-being. It's a mindset that health is a priority and its cultivation is a part of their daily ritual.
A health mindset requires a re-prioritizing of your life, where your personal well being is number 1, even before being a parent. I'm sure you've heard the expression "you can't give from an empty cup" or "put your oxygen mask on before helping anyone else." To give you must first nourish yourself. That is not selfish. It allows you to be your best self to everyone around you. Who doesn't want that? No more yelling at people, getting easily irritated, frustrated, or just too worn out to care or participate. With a health mindset, you are fully present, engaged, loving, and supportive.
Sometimes we just need a little motivation or an "AHA" moment that nudges us to shift and adopt this new healthy mindset. Herbalism can be your AHA. Herbalism is a holistic approach to health that accepts the above definition. The goal of herbalism is to nourish your body, mind, and spirit with plants and nature connection. An herbalist doesn't just want to know that you're having digestive issues, she wants to understand WHY you are having digestive issues. Is it stress, diet, a physical imbalance, or something else? It's the root cause that an herbalist wants to address, so your body can achieve a state of health. This may mean changing your diet, spending daily time meditating, reducing work time, enjoying a walk in the forest, as well as ingesting herbs and wild plants. Taking a pill may be a lot easier, but it will never bring you health, because it doesn't get to the root cause of the problem. It is merely a temporary fix that shields your eyes from the truth.
