Before you eat those leaves, flowers, and berries make sure they are edible! In this class you will learn the basics of edible wild plant identification focusing on plants found during the summer season. You will learn plant terminology, proper use of tools, and discover what parts of the plant help to identify it.
Please bring a lupe (8x) magnifying glass, or something similar and at least one book to identify edible wild plants. Pat recommends the following books:
- Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants: Eastern & Central North America, Lee Peterson & Roger Tory Peterson, Peterson Field Guide Series, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Boston, MA, 1999
- Edible Wild Plants, Thomas S. Elias & Peter A. Dykeman, Outdoor Life Books, Van Nostrand Reinhold Co., NY, 1982
- The Foragers Harvest and/or Nature’s Garden, Samuel Thayer, Forager’s Harvest, WI 2006, 2010
Cost: $25
This class is a prerequisite for students with no prior plant identification experience planning to take the Feast on Flowers - Summer Edible Wild Plants course.
