Native American Energy Bars

Tue, September 9, 2014 07:00 PM - 09:30 PM

Instructor: Pat Armstrong

Native Americans created the original high-energy bars, pemmican, thousands of years ago. Today hikers and climbers eat modern versions of ancient pemmican called granola bars and gorp. Late summer and early fall are the times to collect and dry fruits and berries to mix with chopped nuts to form the base of this prehistoric travel food. Learn which plants you can grow for the best wild fruits and berries and how to create your own pemmican.

Pat will lead you on a slide lecture to learn about the plants and fruits used in pemmican, and how primitive people made this staple survival food. Taste a sample of gorp and take home recipes. This class partners well with the Local Fall Nuts class.
